Health Checkup in Chengdu: A Practical Guide for Foreigners

By Lee, your Chengdu local · Updated 2026 · 10 min read

A full hospital health checkup that would cost $2,000+ in the US routinely runs $300-600 in a top Chengdu public hospital — with modern equipment (Siemens CT/MRI), same-day results, and no weeks-long waiting list. The catch for most foreigners is the language and the unknown process. This guide explains exactly what happens, so nothing surprises you.

What is a "Grade 3A" hospital?

Chinese public hospitals are graded, and Grade 3A (Class A Tertiary, 三甲) is the highest tier — large teaching hospitals with the best equipment and specialists, the same tier Chinese locals choose for serious care. I only arrange Grade 3A hospitals, matched to be close to your hotel. You always receive the hospital's full name and can verify it independently before committing.

What a standard "deep" checkup includes

ComponentWhat it covers
Blood workComplete blood count, liver & kidney function, blood lipids, fasting glucose, thyroid panel, tumor markers
ImagingAbdominal ultrasound, chest CT (or X-ray), ECG; optional thyroid/carotid ultrasound
SpecialistsInternal medicine consult reviewing every result with you
Optional add-onsDental cleaning, eye exam + glasses, TCM consult, gender-specific screening

A comprehensive package like this typically costs 2,000-4,000 RMB per person ($300-600), paid directly at the hospital counter. You get an official stamped receipt.

The morning, step by step

  1. Fast for 8 hours (water is fine). Your car and bilingual companion pick you up around 7:30-8am.
  2. Registration — your companion handles the Chinese forms and payment queue.
  3. Blood draw first, then ultrasound (both need fasting).
  4. Now you eat — many checkup centers provide breakfast; otherwise your guide takes you.
  5. Remaining exams — CT, ECG, specialist consults. A companion routes you efficiently so you skip the confusion.
  6. Results — most reports the same day or next morning; your companion collects and translates the key findings.
The whole checkup usually finishes by lunchtime, leaving your afternoon free for sightseeing. You are never left alone to find the next department.

Safety, payment & boundaries

A travel checkup is for screening and peace of mind, not a replacement for your doctor at home. Take your translated report back to your own physician for any follow-up.
