The Perfect Chengdu 5-Day Itinerary: Pandas, Food & a Health Checkup
Five days is the sweet spot for Chengdu: long enough to see the pandas, eat your way through the city, take one day trip into the mountains, and fit in a thorough health checkup without feeling rushed. This itinerary is built around a relaxed morning-afternoon rhythm, with a private car and an English-speaking guide so you never navigate the metro with no Chinese.
Is 5 days enough for Chengdu?
Yes — if you stay central and don't try to see everything. Chengdu's main sights cluster into three groups: the city itself (pandas, old streets, teahouses, food), one cultural day trip (Dujiangyan or a giant Buddha), and your medical appointments. Five days lets you cover all three comfortably. Here's how I sequence it for guests.
Day 1 — Arrival & an easy first evening
- Afternoon: Private pickup at Chengdu Shuangliu or Tianfu airport and transfer to your hotel. No appointments on day one — you settle in and beat the jet lag.
- Evening: A gentle walk around Kuanzhai Xiangzi (Wide & Narrow Alleys) or Jinli ancient street. Your guide recommends a first Sichuan dinner at a local favorite, not a tourist trap.
Day 2 — Health checkup morning, city afternoon
- Morning (fasting): Private transfer to a Grade 3A public hospital (China's highest rating). Your bilingual companion handles registration, guides you through blood work, ultrasound, CT and specialist consults — usually wrapped up by lunch.
- Lunch: After blood work you can finally eat — your guide takes you for a proper Chengdu meal.
- Afternoon: People's Park for a traditional teahouse, then Wuhou Shrine and the relaxed Jinli area.
Day 3 — Pandas & culture
- Early morning: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Arrive before 9am — pandas are most active at feeding time and sleep through the warm midday hours.
- Afternoon: Return to the city for the old quarter, a Sichuan opera face-changing (bianlian) show in the evening — a surreal, very local experience.
Day 4 — Dental, glasses & the city's best food
- Morning: Dental cleaning and, if you want them, an eye exam with same-day prescription glasses (a fraction of Western prices, ready by afternoon).
- Afternoon: Market and food street wandering — try chuanchuan, dan dan noodles and, if you're brave, proper Chengdu hotpot.
Day 5 — TCM, reports & departure (or extend)
- Morning: Optional TCM massage or cupping, then collect your translated checkup report.
- Departure: Private transfer to the airport. With 7 or 10 days, this is where we add the day trips below.
What 7 and 10 days add
| Extra days | Best additions |
|---|---|
| Day 6-7 (7-day trip) | Leshan Giant Buddha (world's largest stone Buddha) and Mount Emei, one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains. |
| Day 8-10 (10-day trip) | Western Sichuan — alpine meadows, sea of clouds, Tibetan villages and snow peaks around Kangding / Daocheng. Some of China's most dramatic scenery. |
Practical tips for first-timers
- Stay central (Jinjiang or Qingyang district) so every drive is short.
- Carry Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to an international card — foreign cards now work, and cash is a backup.
- Schedule the checkup early in your trip so reports are ready before you leave.
- Pack layers — mountain day trips are much cooler than the city.
