China's 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit, Explained (Chengdu)

Good news: citizens of most Western countries can fly into Chengdu and stay up to 240 hours (10 days) without applying for any visa, under China's visa-free transit policy. It's the single easiest way to do a short Chengdu health-and-travel trip. Here's exactly how it works and where travelers slip up.

Who qualifies

Nationals of 54 countries are eligible, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, and nearly all EU/EEA nations. If you hold one of these passports and meet the transit rules below, no advance visa is needed.

The three core rules

1. Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining and at least one blank page.
2. Onward ticket to a third country/region departing within 240 hours. You are transiting through China: e.g. USA → Chengdu → Thailand, or UK → Chengdu → Japan. You cannot simply fly in and back to the same country.
3. Enter and exit through an eligible port. Chengdu Shuangliu/Tianfu airports are eligible, and you must stay within the approved region for the policy you use (the 240-hour policy allows movement across a wide linked area — confirm the current scope for your route).

The clever routing trick for a Chengdu-first trip

You don't have to start in Shanghai or Beijing. Many guests book an open-jaw (multi-city) flight: fly internationally into Chengdu, spend several days here, then take a cheap domestic flight or high-speed train onward to Shanghai/Xi'an/Beijing, and fly home from there. As long as your onward journey goes to a different country/region within 10 days, the visa-free transit applies.

At the border: what to show

• Your passport
• A printed or digital onward ticket confirming departure within 240 hours to a third country/region
• A short arrival card (handed out on the plane or at the airport)

You'll be stamped with a temporary-stay permit showing your deadline date. Count your days carefully — do not overstay, even by hours.

Staying longer than 10 days?

If you want more than 10 days, or your nationality isn't on the eligible list, you'll need a standard tourist (L) visa from a Chinese embassy or consulate before travel.
